Here is a talasalitaan (Tagalog vocabulary) guide for some of the words found in Rene Villanueva’s Personal: Mga Sanaysay Sa Lupalop Ng Gunita (Personal: Essays in the Realm of Memory).
The objective is to help young teens learn Filipino. So they go through Rene Villanueva’s essays, find Tagalog words they don’t understand, and then search for the meaning of those words….

- Paninisi – pagpapasa ng sisi sa iba (blaming others)
- Nasusuya – nasasawa
- Dabog – kilos na nagpapakita ng galit; malakas na pagsara ng pinto; pagtadyak sa dingding (when you show your anger by banging your fists on the table; by slamming the door; by kicking nearby objects such that they make a large noise)
- Kinikimkim – pagtago ng galit (when you keep it all inside; when you try to hide your anger)
- Ikinukubli – itinatago (when you hide something)
- Natuklasan – nakita (discovered, uncovered, unearthed)
- Paghihikahos – paghihirap (suffering)
- Nakaligtaan – nakalimutan (forgot)
- Masahol – higit na palpak (worse)

- Serbesa – bir (beer)
- Ngumunguyngoy – umiingay (making noise; whimpering; whining)
- Kuliglig – maliit at maingay na kulisap o insekto (cicada)
- Mahimbing – komportable (tranquil)
- Kinukusot – kinukuskos (wringing cloth, rubbing materials together)

- Tumimbuang [timbuang] – bumulagta (fell flat on one’s back, with legs spread apart)
- Kulambo – telang manipis, puno ng malilit na butas, panlaban sa lamok (mosquito net)

- Mag-urirat – magtanong (ask questions)
- Pumalya – nasira (broke down, such as a car)
- Makalagpas – makalampas (to exceed, to pass, to go beyond)
- Walang Katinag-tinag – hindi matanggal sa kinaroroonan (rooted to one spot)
- Iturok – itusok ng karayom o injeksyon (to inject)
- Matingkad – maningning (brilliant, shiny, bright-colored)
- Inimpis – inalisan ng tambok (flattened)
- Maaninag – makita nang kaunti, o ng di gaanong malinaw (to faintly see, as when looking through a sheet of translucent glass)
- Nakaratay [ratay / datay] – nakahiga, dahil may karamdaman (bedridden)
- Sumutsot (sumuwit) – bumigkas ng “Sssuuutttt!” (to say “Pssst!”)
