Janina San Miguel – Bb. Pilipinas 2008
You’ve heard about how Janina San Miguel won in the Bb. Pilipinas 2008 beauty pageant. And since her use of the English language was less than stellar during the Q&A portion, a lot of people complained.
Why did she win, some people wonder.
How can someone who cannot communicate well in English win Miss World Philippines?

…there must be a misunderstanding or miscalculations with the scores last night…

Here’s the response of Janina San Miguel.
Here’s my reaction to this whole thing, after viewing Janina’s interview and post-incident response: First of all, I’m not from UE nor am I a friend or relative of Janina. Still, I wonder how we can help more Filipinos–at least those who wish to do so–speak better English.
No, I am not judging Janina’s communication skills. I am acknowledging, however, that a lot of my fellow Filipinos do struggle with the English language. And I can’t shake the feeling that things are getting worst. (Just kidding! I meant “worse.”) 😛
