The gist is this: while Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus all get tons of interest, email is quietly chugging away as the workhorse of the connected world. Email, even after discounting the volume that’s spam, is used far more than Facebook and Twitter combined. How much more? Daily activity for Facebook is pegged at 60 million upates. Twitter sees about 140 million tweets per day. Email? 188 billion messages.
Do you know what 188 billion email messages will look like?
- For every 2 messages posted in Facebook and Twitter, 1000 non-spam emails are sent.
- For every 11 searches made (in Google, Yahoo!, and Bing combined), 1000 non-spam emails are sent.
- For every webpage viewed, 4 emails are sent.
Here’s a YouTube playlist showing Jeff Hardy (V.P. of Business Operations at SmarterTools), giving his “Value of Email” presentation at HostingCon 2011.
The session was called “The Lessons of the Ten: Why Google and Microsoft Want Your Email”. In the session Jeff discusses how email is still the most valuable piece of identity any one has in the online economy and goes on to stress three main points about email: it is valuable, it does NOT have to be difficult or expensive to provide and it is profitable and provides stickiness to an end user.
The key lessons are:
- Email is valuable.
- Email does not have to be hard or expensive.
- Email is sticky and profiable.
In other words, an important part of your online marketing campaign is: Email Marketing.
The question is, what are YOU going to do about it?
